Kimberly Cassar is participating in the international project together with more than 200 youths from 53 countries.
The Ruta Quetzal study and adventure trip began in Madrid last week and will last 35 days.
The participants will take advanced courses in language, anthropology and sociology and will take part in an intense sports programme.
They will also travel to the Moche Desert in Peru, and to the Amazon Jungle to study the Moche culture closely.
Every applicant was required to submit an original piece of historical, literary, artistic or musical work covering one of several pre-designated topics. They were also required to write a formal letter and a one-page description of the project in Spanish.
