The University’s Institute for Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College London (UCL) recently completed a summer school on spatial data and geographic information systems (GIS), held at the Msida Campus.
The course attracted a group of delegates who had the opportunity to apply GIS using spatial statistical techniques available in GIS software and investigate aspects of data quality.
The use of global positioning systems (GPS) equipment during the summer school allowed for students to appreciate how spatial data is created and how GPS interface with GIS.
Delegates on the course included research students, technical staff from utility companies and government agencies as well as foreign students.
The teaching faculty consisted of the University’s Maria Attard and Thérèse Bajada, and Muki Haklay, Helena Titheridge and Claire Ellul from UCL.
Kate Jones, from Portsmouth University, was a visiting lecturer.
The institute will be launching a postgraduate certificate in GIS this year. Visit www.um.edu.mt/isd for more information.
