Daniel Holland and J.J. Micallef will depart for Greece today ahead of their participation in the official qualifying event for the 2011 Faldo Series Grand Final. The qualifying rounds are scheduled to take place on July 12 and 13 on the Dunes Course at Costa Navarino.
Sir Nick Faldo (winner of three Open Championships and three Masters Tournament) created the Faldo Series in 1996 to help identify and nurture the next generation of champions.
The Faldo Series Asia followed in 2006 and over 30 annual tournaments now take place in more than 25 countries throughout the UK, Europe, South America, the Middle East and Asia.
Each year, over 5,000 talented golfers worldwide, boys and girls aged 12 to 21, benefit from a unique combination of tournament experience and expert guidance, including support and advice from Faldo himself.
The leading players qualify for either the Faldo Series Grand Final in Europe or the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in China, both R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking events. The European finals will this year be held in September at the Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland.
This will be the second experience for Holland and Micallef in these championships. They took part in last year’s edition, which was also held at the Dunes Resort, with Micallef finishing second in his age group.
Playing in a lower age-group, Holland placed 13th in what was then only his second experience in a major overseas competition. The boys will have the possibility of three practice rounds ahead of the competition as well as individual training sessions with Keith Wood (coach to Faldo and director of instruction to Faldo Academies).
The participation of Holland and Micallef (both members of the Royal Malta Golf Club) is being made possible thanks to the sponsorship of M. Demajo (Wines & Spirits), agents of Veuve Clicquot, under the auspices of the Malta Golf Association.
