Cricket: A Pakistani court summoned cricket authorities to explain why they have not cleared Danish Kaneria to play after he was released without charge in a spot-fixing case. Kaneria and fellow Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield were arrested last year on charges of spot-fixing during a Pro40 match against Durham in 2009. Kaneria was released without being charged but Westfield faces criminal proceedings. Kaneria featured in Pakistan’s series against England last year but has not been selected since then.
Baseball: Toronto’s Jose Bautista garnered the most votes in fan balloting for a starting spot as Major League Baseball announced its rosters for the 82nd All-Star Game on Sunday. The Blue Jays outfielder received 7.45 million votes to break Ken Griffey’s record of 6.06 million votes set 17 years ago. Bautista will be joined in the 2011 All-Star classic by Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun who was the top vote-getter in the National League.
Golf: Swede Fredrik Jacobson, Dane Thorbjorn Olesen and Americans Harrison Frazar and Charles Howell all earned places in the Open Championship. Jacobson and Frazar claimed the two spots on offer from a “current form” mini-money list on the PGA Tour, while Olesen and Howell were the leading non-exempt players at the French Open and AT&T National. Olesen tied for second with England’s Mark Foster, but will be at Sandwich by virtue of being the higher player on the world rankings.
Tour De France: American Tyler, of Garmin-Cervelo, celebrated Independence Day in perfect style by outsprinting the peloton to win the third stage yesterday. Thor Hushovd, of Norway, retained the race leader’s yellow jersey. Farrar timed his run-in to perfection, shadowing Hus-hovd’s break in the final kilometre of the 198km run from Olonne-sur-mer to Redon and kicking with 150m to go to complete the stage win in 4:40.21. Romain Feillu and Jose Joaquin Rojas were second and third in the stage.
