Air Malta pilots have voted to authorise their trade union to call industrial action, including suspension of service.
The secret vote was taken at a meeting called by the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) just before the start of talks between Air Malta and four trade unions on a programme of voluntary redundancy for the airline's workers
The airline wants to shed 511 workers, including 57 pilots from a total of 149.
Informed sources said that 137 pilots had cast their vote out of a total of 140, and although vote-counting had not yet been concluded, only two people had so far voted against strike action.
The pilots also confirmed a union proposal to hold a demonstration in Valletta on July 15. Reports a few days ago said a strike could take place on July 16. The Union of Cabin Crew yesterday said it would support the demonstration.
The pilots also approved a motion expressing lack of confidence in Air Malta's management. A spokesman said this resolution was not addressed at the recent appointees but at those who had been running Air Malta since 2004.
The union is insisting that before dismissing any pilots, Air Malta can make substantial savings by renegotiating contracts, particularly with Malta International Airport.
