Mary Fenech Adami’s family is asking people to keep praying for the former First Lady who remains in a “very critical condition”  after suffering a heart attack on Saturday night.

“We are aware of the sympathy, support and prayers that people around the island are showing towards our mother,” said Beppe Fenech Adami, one of her five children.

“Our appeal is that people keep praying for her. She is still very critical but, so long as she is alive, there is hope,” the Nationalist MP said.

Mrs Fenech Adami, 77, is fighting for her life after being taken ill at the wedding reception of the Prime Minister’s son at Girgenti Palace. She collapsed after suffering a heart attack.

She was taken by ambulance to Mater Dei Hospital and admitted to intensive care where she remained until yesterday as her condition did not improve.

Mrs Fenech Adami has been receiving treatment for cancer after being diagnosed with the condition a year ago and undergoing surgery.

As news of her condition spread, people showed their support through a barrage of comments posted on timesofmalta.com.

One person wrote: “I still consider Mrs Mary Fenech Adami as the First Lady in Malta. She was and still is a perfect example of humbleness.”

A woman wrote: “She is a lovely person with a great character, approachable and so humble... She is in my prayers.”

In another comment a reader said: “Such a strong and great woman. May God be with you and with your loved ones in this moment. You’re in our prayers.”
