Basketball: Women’s European Championship final: Russia vs Turkey 59-42.

Winter Games: South Korean president Lee Myung-Bak is in Durban to lobby on behalf of Pyeongchang for the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. Lee will be hoping to convince the majority of the 100-plus members of the International Olympic Committee to give Pyeongchang the Games at the third successive time of asking. Pyeongchang, runners-up in the contests to organise the 2010 and 2014 Games, are up against Munich and Annecy. If successful, it would be the first time that the Winter Olympics are held in South Korea.

Swimming: Michael Phelps easily won the 200 metre freestyle, finishing more than two seconds ahead of compatriot Matthew Patton at the Canada Cup swim event last weekend. The 14-time Olympic gold medallist clocked one minute, 47.46 seconds for the win with Patton finishing second at 1:49.87. Canada’s Ryan Cochrane was third in 1:50.08. The Canada Cup is a tune-up for the World Championships in two weeks in Shanghai, China.

Davis Cup: David Nalbandian has been forced out of Argentina’s July 8-10 Davis Cup quarter-final against Kazakhstan with a muscle injury, his captain Modesto Vasquez revealed. Nalbandian, the 29-year-old world number 23, will be replaced by Eduardo Schwank, who takes his place on the team alongside Juan Ignacio Chela, Juan Martin del Potro and Juan Monaco. Nalbandian underwent surgery on a hernia at the beginning of March but injured himself again during his third-round defeat by Roger Federer at Wimbledon last month.

Cricket: England bowler Stuart Broad has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee for breaching the ICC code of conduct during the second one-day international against Sri Lanka at Headingley on Friday. Broad was found to have breached article 2.2.1 which relates to “showing serious dissent at an umpire’s decision”. The incident happened in the final over of the Sri Lanka innings when Broad appealed for an lbw, which was turned down.
