Aircraft in emergency landing after losing an engine
A French military surveillance aircraft made an emergency landing in Malta last night after one of its two engines failed.
The turbo-prop Atlantique aircraft landed safely at about 1.30 a.m. after the airport emergency service deployed fire tenders and rescue vehicles around the runway.
Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department were also on stand-by at the airport.

Since young and I had seen a film on American Panther Fighters being lost on Japanese grounds, while his wing man made it to the aircraft carrier, I always thought that it would be simple for every wircraft to have a towing steel cable, which it could release to tow a friend in need! after all most planes we had landing in Malta flew in pairs.
All it would involve is a ten ton cable wound up and a tow hook arrrangement as they have on the fuel airborne refilling system. All one needs to do is to modify the existing fuel probes such that when one loses his engines or fuel, the other would unwing his towing cable and they would line up as they do when refuelling and off they go to the nearest landing patch. I do not think it will be that expensive not weights as steel can take about 100 tons per square inch and so ten tons would need about one tenth of a square inch. and that is a small steel cable.
I will not patent this idea as if it is implimented it would save lives and I always promised myself that I will never get paid for helping other sae their life.

Your reference to American Panther fighters seems to relate to the 1950's Korean War film called
"The Bridges at Toko-Ri" with William Holden, Grace Kelly and Mickey Rooney.

The Grumman F9F-5 Panther was the US Navy's new jet engined carrier borne fighter aircraft back then and entered US Navy service in May 1949. The aircraft had straight wings but was soon followed by the faster F9F-8 Cougar having swept back wings, entering US Navy service on November 1952.

Hello Professor Pule',
I thought so !
Perhaps you also remember the film with US actor James Stewart called "Strategic Air Command". Some good footage of the massive beast the Convair B36 Peacemaker was and it's awesome noise ;

Another classic one with US actor James Stewart is the "Spirit of St.Louis". The film based on the book written by Charles Augustus Lindbergh himself about his famous solo flight across the Atlantic. A must read, really.

I do not mind the presence of these planes on our soil, but their frequent landings due to engine failure raises doubts about the reliability of these French aircrafts.

Just to let people know that this French Atlantique aircraft is powered by British Rolls Royce Tyne turboprops !!
Come on sweethearts, there's good potential for some "constructive" contributions here, no ;-))
On a more serious note, the Brequet Atlantique uses an interesting form of construction element within it's structure. Bonded Honeycomb panels which have a very impressive strength to wieght ratio. The panels are used in the construction of the pressurised stringerless area of the fuselage and on the lower and upper stringerless skins of the 3 spar wing design the aircraft utilises.
This is how a section of a fabricated honeycomb panel looks like :

What about a GE/SNECMA powered Boeing KC135 mon cheri ? A aerial refueling tanker running out of fuel, perhaps ;-))
The French have one of the world's most beautiful languages, buggers, I'm jealous !!

I read the twenty nine comments written and what irks me is that no-one mentioned the possibilty that one of these days, with so many emergency landings, a plane would not make it to the runway and crashes in an urban area!

I am sure that this is some elaborate ruse by the French Air Force to headhunt our Arriva Bus drivers...
Well given the circumstances, they would actually do a better job in flying these planes... if they turn up for work of course...

For all that doubt the authenticity of these landings do you really think that the pilot shut down one engine on a twin engined aircraft at two in the morning and landed the aircraft on one engine just to have a plausible excuse to land in Malta instead of returning to his home base. Before you talk think twice please.

Does NOT auger well on the French Air Force's logistic and technical capabilities.
Reminds me of a question placed to Gen. Eisenhower during WWII. When asked what would scare him more than having the whole German Army in front of him, Dwight replied, "Having the French Army BEHIND me!" LOL

The French jets run out of fuel regularly, their planes go technical on a regular basis - some air force. Do they not know the capacity of their fuel tanks, the distance from their bases to Libya and back and with a calculator work out fuel requirements? Is this so complicated? How come the RAF, the Italians and the Americans can work this out but not the French?

The answer is very simple, they are wise man. But tell me this what diffrence does it makee to you if an aircraft lands here in malta and when it goes to libya you know that it is helping people..And when you have an engine failure you wont know if its going to happen or not.But i want to answer you about the fuel situation !! All the militaries operating in Libya know that the constitution of malta says that no aircraft or ships may land or enter into a port in case of war unless its an emergency landing or something else.So they come with an excuse that they ran out of fue..But I dont see nothing bad if they land here and they go back to help people.
Mr Ambrose Zahra
Jul 4th 2011, 11:56
I don't see anything bad either. Just wonder why it's always the French who run out of fuel - or not!
Andre Grech
Jul 4th 2011, 15:31
Mr Ambrose Zahra we always hear about french aircraft because they are the ones who are doing most of the job and france doesn't have carriers in the mediteranean so they should depart from bases ex from Sicily Turkey Cyprus Spain .
