National squash courts: a real shame

As a former chairman of Malta Squash, I feel I must support what Steve Rizzo wrote (The Sunday Times, June 19) regarding the shameful state of the National Pool squash courts. I remember these squash courts being built (believe me it was a mammoth task).

As a former chairman of Malta Squash, I feel I must support what Steve Rizzo wrote (The Sunday Times, June 19) regarding the shameful state of the National Pool squash courts.

I remember these squash courts being built (believe me it was a mammoth task). It was thanks to the sheer determination and devotion of former minister Jesmond Mugliett that these squash courts came into being, and also the Cottonera Sports Complex.

Without fail he always had time to listen and help the association when necessary. And the game of squash thrived and our players always brought home honours.

For some time now it is solely the huge determination and devotion of the players and committee members who even fork out money from their own pockets, to train at private clubs because, as Mr Rizzo rightly stated, the national squash courts are far from fit to play in.

The only time people from the government are seen is when a photo opportunity arises. So a very big well done to the players, Squash Malta chairman and all committee members for the four gold medals obtained in Liechtenstein.
