Australia’s triple Olympic gold medallist Libby Trickett’s world championship hopes have been dashed after she missed out on qualifying in a 100-metre freestyle relay selection trial.
Trickett, 26, who is making a return to competitive swimming after retiring from the sport in December 2009, finished sixth in the swim-off in 55.68sec behind 50m butterfly world champion Marieke Guehrer in Adelaide.
“I got really emotional and while it wasn’t the result I was looking for I am still happy at how I executed that swim,” Trickett told reporters.
“While the time wasn’t the best, I am happy with where I’m at and just pleased to be back racing and looking forward to the rest of the ride and swimming at short course this weekend.”
Trickett will make her return to competitive swimming at the Australian Short Course Championships in Adelaide being held from today to Sunday.
Trickett had to wait nine months because of international drug-testing protocols before being eligible to compete again at a FINA-recognised meet.
Guehrer, who won the time trial in 54.29sec, and Commonwealth Games relay gold medallist Kyle Richardson both qualified for selection in the Australian team for this month’s world championships in Shanghai.
