@ Mr Korsten: Absolutely not a 'gib l'hawn u tiehux l'hemm' syndrome. I also wrote 'improve a relationship' too, so it was not just a matter of gain or anything. It is just that going for a jolly with all the entourage is not exactly what a presidency should be doing. The presidency represents us all, it comes at a financial cost and while courtesy and mutual respect is most desireable there should also be a priority order, and I don't think Monaco sits high on that list.

What will Malta gain exactly by such visit? This is not some country we trade with or one where we can hope to improve a relationship.

We get free chips in their casino.
Honestly, what sort of question is this? The relationship with my family is already stellar, and I won't gain anything, so why bother visiting them if they're in hospital?
It's called 'courtesy'. Look that word up, it comes in handy sometimes.

In other words we should only visit a country if there is something to be gained by us?
(The usual, gib l-hawn u tiehux l- hemm?)
Friends invite friends to their functions, after all, Monaco is a sovereign country and as such invited the president of another sovereign country to attend a very official function.
