Hip hop legend Snoop Dogg lost his cool demeanour for a while yesterday when asked why he had left journalists waiting for a total of four hours before showing up.

“Well nigga, you wait for another four hours, that’s what it is when you’re dealing with a superstar, you gotta wait, now, you just f****** your question up, get your ass outta here,” the hip hop artiste told The Times.

He had been asked to comment on why he hadn’t shown up at a press event on Wednesday, when journalists had waited for two hours for him in vain, and then let more journalists wait for another two hours yesterday.

After asking the question, The Times’ reporter was escorted out of the rapper’s top-floor suite by a security guard as the press event continued inside.

Earlier on, Snoop, who headlined the Isle of MTV Malta special yesterday night, had said he was impressed by Malta’s beauty and history. It may have been a case of letting sleeping dogs lie, as he hinted at the reason for having kept people waiting for so long: “I slept real well” the rapper told a press attaché as soon as he surfaced, adding it was important for him to be well-rested before a performance.

He was asked by an MTV journalist how it would feel last night for him to hear lyrics being sung in English by fans – the Maltese – whose first language was not English.

He said it was great that music helped connect with people of all cultures and that it helped them “learn English”.

He also said he hoped the Maltese would teach him some of their language so he could learn a few words in it.

Seated on a red armchair and wearing a black tracksuit, shades and a beanie, Dogg, smoking a thin cigar, told journalists that he was inspired by the people who loved the music, such as the 50,000 people expected in the audience for yesterday’s concert. But while he wore a track suit in the afternoon sun yesterday, on Wednesday he had arrived at the airport topless.

MIA’s customer service and security representative accompanying the rapper’s entourage “asked the artist’s representative to solicit the artist to put on his shirt, but to no avail,” an airport spokesman said.

The airport, being a public place, is subject to national laws which stipulate that someone who “exposes himself naked or is indecently dressed” in public is breaking the law.

“In cases where any passenger resists instructions, MIA refers the matter to the police but the passenger in question cleared the terminal restricted areas before any effective action could be practically taken,” the spokesman said.
