Campaigners in the UK are urging the government to introduce a road sign across the UK which alerts motorists to potholes.

The sign, a white triangle with a red rim, depicts a car on an uneven road surface with its wheel in a pothole.

The design, created by Confused.com car insurance, was inspired by pothole campaigner Ted Relf, a plumber from Shadoxhurst, near Ashford, Kent, who was told by police remove his home-made warning sign against potholes last year.

A new study, conducted on 2,000 people by the insurance firm, found that 90 per cent of drivers don’t feel adequately alerted to potholes on the road and 82 per cent of motorists would like to see a road sign dedicated to potholes.

Mike Hoban, chief marketing officer at Confused.com says: “Although repairing these roads is obviously the long term solution, something needs to be done now.”
