Commonwealth Games Federation Chief Executive Mike Hooper arrives for a press conference in Colombo along with Louise Martin, who heads the Commonwealth Games Evaluation Committee. The two officials are currently on a four-day visit to evaluate Sri Lanka’s bid to host the 2018 Games in the southern town of Hambantota. Sri Lanka, which is up against Australia’s Gold Coast , plans to spend $4 billion to build new venues and infrastructure to host the Games that feature up to 17 sports for athletes from 71 countries of former British colonies. Sri Lanka, which is emerging from decades of ethnic conflict, hopes to use the Games as a platform to attract new investments to the economy.
