Polish culture capital

The Polish city of Wroclaw has been chosen as one of two European Culture Capitals in 2016.

The southwestern city was among five in the running for the prestigious tourist-friendly title and the chance to host a series of cultural events.

A Spanish city is expected to be named the other culture capital by Thursday.

It marks the first time since the formerly communist country joined the EU in 2004 that a Polish city will be designated a culture capital.

Cities designated EU culture capitals traditionally organise exhibits, concerts and artistic performances throughout the calendar year to mark the occasion.

Malta is currently in the bidding process to have Valletta as capital of culture in 2018.
