Even though Apple owns the biggest part of the digital music service pie, it still cannot stop other companies from challenging them by coming up with a better music buying and using service.

The latest and definitely the most unusual challenger to date is Beyond Oblivion. This service has not yet been released, but a commercial release is planned sometime in June.

The model of this new service is based on the idea that the copyright holder of the song played on a device gets paid every time a song is played – this works regardless of the song’s origin and even on music that has been ripped off a CD or illegally obtained.

However, Beyond Oblivion will not work on any existing portable media player, and you would need to buy an officially licensed media player to use these functionalities.

The system also allows the user to follow similar-minded people or musicians to discover new songs and even copy their playlists.

How the company is going to make a profit is still a mystery, but we’ll just have to wait and see if this service proves to be a success or not.
