A man yesterday claimed he was beaten by the police when they arrested him for allegedly breaking into a clothing shop in Mrieħel on Thursday.

Anton Vassallo, 32, from Żabbar, was pursued by policemen and then arrested following the theft, Police Inspector Jeffrey Cilia told the court.

At this point, defence lawyer Marion Camilleri asked Magistrate Gabriella Vella to appoint a medical expert to document and photograph her client’s injuries.

Mr Cilia informed her that Mr Vassallo had already been seen by a doctor at a health centre and that the injuries he is claiming to have sustained were only scratches judging by what he could see from photographs.

The magistrate appointed forensic pathologist Mario Scerri to examine the accused.

Mr Vassallo pleaded not guilty to stealing money and clothing from the shop in Mrieħel and to eight other thefts in May 2003.
