As in other old cemeteries round Europe, the Addolorata Cemetery probably hosts among the oldest Aleppo pines (żnuber), Italian cypresses (ċipress) and old holm oaks (ballut) in the Maltese Islands.
The area also hosts a small population of old elm (Ulmu) trees and old specimens of some very rare ornamental tree species such as the paper mulberry and the osage orange.
The holm oak trees in the area also host a decent population of the cerambycid longhorn beetle, which is rare in Europe and strictly protected under the EC Habitats Directive, the Bern Convention and the flora, fauna and natural habitats protection regulations.
The area which is scheduled is also protected as a bird sanctuary and a nature reserve. The Malta Environment and Planning Authority declared this site as a Tree Protected Area on May 24, in accordance with the provisions of the Trees and Woodlands Protection Regulations (2011) as per Government Notice number 473/11.
