The defence lawyer of a man who this morning pleaded not guilty to a series of thefts told the court this morning it seemed her client was beaten up by police officers when he was arrested following a chase.

Anton Vassallo, 32, Zabbar pleaded not guilty to stealing cash and items from Outta Control in Mriehel at 4.30 a.m. on Wednesday. He also denied eight other thefts in May 2003.

Defence lawyer Marion Camilleri asked for an independent medical legal expert to evaluate her clients' injuries.

Police Inspector Jeffrey Cilia said the accused was taken to a health centre, where he was seen and photographed. His injuries were also documented.

Sources said that Mr Vassallo was injured when the police ran after him during Wednesday's theft.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella appointed forensic pathologist Mario Scerri to examine the accused, who she remanded in custody.
