The 2011 Engineering Projects Exhibition, organised by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta, will be held on July 1 and 2.

This year there will be 93 final year project exhibits covering a wide spectrum of electrical and mechanical subject areas covered by the six departments within the Faculty of Engineering: Electronic Systems Engineering; Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering; Industrial Electrical Power Conversion; Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgy and Materials Engineering; and Systems and Control Engineering.

Currently, there are 447 undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students within the faculty.

Final year students will be present at the various laboratories to give an overview of their projects on display. During the course of these projects, which spread over the final year of the engineering degree, the students apply the skills and knowledge gained during their years of study to look into various challenges using theoretical, experimental and/or simulation techniques.

Information technology tools are applied throughout the wide spectrum of projects presented, ranging from development of electrical and electronic hardware, advanced coupling with control software to computer aided industrial, mechanical and materials processing and testing equipment. A number of projects are carried out in direct collaboration with industry in order to better exploit the applied nature of engineering sciences.

Following the successful hard work by the faculty on a number of projects funded by the European Regional Development Fund, millions of euros have been invested in the laboratories to equip them with state of the art instrumentation, machinery and engineering software. This year, numerous undergraduate students have benefited from this newly commissioned equipment during the realisation of their final year projects.

The Engineering Projects Exhibition is open on July 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on July 2 from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Malta.

The exhibition will give prospective students a taste of the faculty’s environment so they can make an informed career choice. To this end an information seminar about undergraduate courses on offer will be held on July 1 at 4p.m. just before the opening of the Projects Exhibition in the Engineering Lecture Theatre of the Engineering Building.
