Bonello Spiteri set for Lake District Half Ironman
Triathlete Danica Bonello Spiteri has achieved some encouraging results in the UK this season.
Maltese triathlete Danica Bonello Spiteri will compete in the Lake District Half Ironman on Sunday.
The middle distance triathlon race will consist of a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike ride and a 21km run. The proposed route is one of the most challenging in the UK with the bike and run segments set on hilly terrain.
Bonello Spiteri, Malta’s 2010 sportswoman of the year, has already been very active in the UK triathlon scene. In her first outing, she took part in the Wetherby Triathlon, finishing in a creditable fifth place despite the adverse weather conditions and cold temperatures.
The Allerthorpe Triathlon, held in York, was her second race of the year. Over 250 participants gathered on the start line for this sprint distance triathlon.
Bonello Spiteri was first out of the 750m swim in her group and rode strongly in the 20km bike segment despite the prevailing winds. A solid 5km final run saw Bonello Spiteri finish sixth in a time of 1hr 10 minutes.
A doctor by profession, Bonello Spiteri is specialising in sports and exercise medicine in the UK.
