In yesterday’s article, entitled Eddie’s Less-Than-Edifying Comments, President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami was quoted as having suggested that “the government should call a snap election rather than respect the people’s verdict on divorce”.
What Dr Fenech Adami actually said, in an article published in The Sunday Times on June 19, was the following: “MPs cannot ignore the result of the referendum... The way out of this impasse is quite clear: legislation on divorce should be postponed by Parliament until after the next election where the issue will figure in the election manifestos of all political parties.”
He added: “The Nationalist Party should stick to its position... but allow individual candidates to take a different view which they would be expected to make public in the election campaign... This will give new MPs a mandate to form a government supported by a majority and each individual member a mandate to vote on divorce depending on the stand they took during the election campaign.”
The misrepresentation is regretted.
