Barriera Wharf cannot be translated as Quarry Wharf (June 18) as the name does not refer to a quarry on the site but to the arrangement of hardstone pillars linked by wooden beams as a form of quarantine, albeit less harsh than that of the Lazaretto at Manoel Island.

The site remained intact until 1937 when a new fishmarket was built. The Barriera or barrier was recalled in a marble plaque on the new building. This was destroyed during the war and not replaced. Only one hardstone pillar remains – it is a listed artefact.
