Cemetery thefts - three arraigned
Two people this morning pleaded not guilty to stealing tombstone copper ornaments and another pleaded not guilty to buying the stolen goods.
Ronald Azzopardi, 24, of Zabbar and Joanne Ellul, 33, of Zejtun pleaded not guilty to stealing the items from the Addolorata cemetery in May. They were also charged with relapsing.
Mr Azzopardi also pleaded not guilty to stealing similar goods from the Gudja cemetery in April.
Police Inspector Anthony Portelli said the accused had major drug problems.
In a separate arraignment held soon after, Emanuel Hayman, 57, of Fgura, pleaded not guilty to receiving the stolen goods.
Inspector Portelli said that some nine sacks full of tombstone ornaments were found in his possession.
All three were remanded in custody.

See in what state this nation called Malta is in. People are stealing copper ornaments in trying to make ends meet. Post EU progress where people are living in poverty. We never heard of these news before. This is the difference of earning 500€16c plus 6,000€ and the Maltese rubbish 1€16c while this ruthless PN regime is also contemplating to abolish the COLA. Gvern ahdar u insensitiv.

Just heard in the news that the value put on the contents of the nine sacks is around €2500. Somebody must be mad to make such an evaluation. Well it could be the value of the scrap bronze by weight but surely not of the items stolen. I am one of the victims and the value stolen from us is around €400. I learnt that over 100 tombstones had items stolen from them. Hence the figure stolen should be in the region of €40,000!

Hopefully the culprits who stole items and damaged various graves in the Vittoriosa Cemetery, will also be brought to justice. These are despicable crimes.

Hopefully not another case of the law courts handing down suspended sentences. These men should be made to pay for all the damages and then they must for out the money to have the ornaments back in place. They should also be made to make a PUBLIC apology for the heartache they caused to the relatives of the deceased. No more no less.

Lets us hope there is enough evidence to bring a successful prosecution and conviction then of course it down to the Law Courts to dish out punishment that fits the crimes. Surely the Court of this Country cannot keep pussy footing around with totally inadequate suspended sentencing which is making a mockery of the whole legal system.

if they are convicted,,,,,, lets give these guys a lesson .
and the whole country's increasing mob.
some things are sacred, untouchable.
as are children and their innocence.
THIS is where we need to show we are strong,,,,,,,, and not in other issues seen lately!!!!

il-Qrati ghandhom jkunu severi ma kazi bhal dawn. Ghandhom iwasslu messaġġ lil kull min minhabba problema jew oħra ma ifissirix li huma ghandhom ikunu tolleranti. Il-vittmi ghandhom jigu protetti ukoll mod specjali meta insterqu affarijiet minn post sagru. Jekk ma issirx gustizija għal affarijiet bhal dawn ifisser li kulhadd jista jaghmel li jrid f'dan il-pajjiz. Jekk nies bhal dan ma jigux ikkastigati jkun qed jinghata sinjal li wiehed jista jisraq sabiex ikompli jpaxxi l-vizzji tieghu personali.
