Two foreigners were each jailed for 11 years today for having separately imported drugs to Malta.
The court was told that Mihai Miu flew in from Düsseldorf on October 21, 2009. Upon questioning at airport Customs, he immediately admitted to carrying drugs in his soles.
The police found a packet of cocaine in each shoe - a total of 1.09kg with a street value of €82,844
The accused told the police that a short time before he came to Malta he agreed to carry the drugs to Malta. He met another man in Amsterdam who gave him the drugs and flight tickets. In Malta he was to hand the drugs to two other persons and be paid €3,000 of which he was to retain €500.
The man was also fined €23,000.
In a separate case, Ginka Atanasova Stefanova was also jailed for 11 years and fined €23,000 after being convicted of having flown in from Brussels with drug capsules hidden in her stomach and her private parts.
The police found 430 grams of cocaine and 329 grams of heroin with a total street value of €47,800. The case happened on September 26, 2009.
