Cricket: England will be playing at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens after all this year, after the venues were announced for this autumn’s one-day international series against India. England will be heading to Kolkata, Mumbai, Mohali, Hyderabad and Delhi in October and November. The sequence and exact dates are yet to be finalised.

Tennis: French Marion Bartoli defeated Czech Petra Kvitova 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to win the Eastbourne grasscourt title yesterday in a timely boost ahead of Wimbledon. Bartoli had reached the final earlier in the day by thrashing Australia’s Samantha Stosur 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals.

Cycling: Juan Mauricio Soler remained in an artificial coma but showed further positive signs of improvement, doctors said yesterday, following the cyclist’s crash on the Tour of Switzerland in mid-week. Soler lost control on the race’s sixth stage Thursday, suffering a fractured skull, swelling in the brain and a broken ankle.

Marathon: Ethiopian world record holder Haile Gebreselassie will bid for a fifth Berlin Marathon title on September 25. The 38-year-old wants to use the Berlin event to book his ticket to the Olympic Games in London in 2012, organisers said yesterday.
