Malta last year placed third in the list of countries that had the cleanest bathing waters in the EU.
Cyprus was the star performer, with 100 per cent of its bathing water sites meeting strict guide values.
The results from the annual Bathing Water Report from the European Environment Agency and the European Commission, show that 97.3 per cent of Croatia’s bathing water sites meet the highest standards, Malta at 95.4 per cent, Greece at 94.2 per cent and Ireland at 90.1 per cent.
The water quality study was carried out in more than 21,000 coastal and inland bathing sites across the EU-27.
The Commission has also adopted new signs and symbols that will be used to inform the public on bathing water classification and on bathing restrictions.
