Eco-contribution exemption will be one of the main issues to be discussed during the annual general meeting of Green Pak Coop being held tomorrow.

Earlier this year, the Ombudsman said that the government’s refusal to give eco-tax exemptions to companies participating in organised recycling schemes was unacceptable and could lead to abuse.

Following a complaint by Green Pak in 2009, the Ombudsman concluded that all its members since 2006 are entitled to eco-tax exemptions or tax credits.

Last April, the government published a legal notice making it possible for companies that had participated in an authorised waste recovery scheme during 2005-2008 to claim their eco-tax.

Since 2006, Green Pak Coop has operated one of the largest authorised packaging waste recovery schemes in Malta.

Today, it has over 700 members under the cooperative banner of ‘legal compliance at the leastpossible cost’.

All companies trading in Malta are obliged to recover the packaging waste generated by their business activity. Producers participating in Green Pak Coop’s scheme do not need to do this, as waste will be recovered on their behalf through a nationwide scheme.

The AGM will be held at the Malta Chamber of Commerce in Valletta.

The meeting also provides an opportunity for members of the cooperative to become shareholders of the Green Pak Coop, and thus participate in important decisions, such as voting and sharing of profits.
