Physiotherapy students on the University’s B.Sc. course recently teamed up with St Monica School, Birkirkara, to hold a ‘Move for Health Day’, a World Health Organisation event created to promote regular exercise to improve health and wellbeing.

Over 300 people took part in the event during which the pupils and their families participatedin basketball, football, water games, an aerobics class, a gymnastics demonstration, and Wii competitions.

Fitness tests were carried out, and people who wanted to have an indication of their current weight and fitness status had their body mass index calculated.

Information leaflets promoting the advantages of exercise and tips on how to include physical activity and healthy eating into one’s daily lifestyle were also distributed.

By organising such events the pysiotherapy students hope to create more awareness regarding ever increasing health problems in Maltese society; Malta has the highest percentage of overweight and obese youths worldwide and only 25.6 per cent of Maltese children surveyed are physically active. The students hope to get the message across that incorporating exercise and appropriate nutrition into everyday life helps prevent future weight-related ailments and diseases.
