New claims for unemployment benefits in the US fell to the lowest level in a month, official data showed last Thursday. Initial jobless claims dropped to 414,000 in the week ending June 11, a decline of four per cent from the prior week, the Labour Department said. The decline was steeper than economists’ forecasts of 421,000 claims. Picture shows a jobs sign on the front of the US Chamber of Commerce building in Washington DC.
