University Chancellor David Attard has been elected judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, obtaining the highest number of votes in an election at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
He was elected yesterday during a meeting of states parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Since October 1992, Prof. Attard has served as director of the International Maritime Law Institute of the International Maritime Organisation. The institute specialises in training lawyers, particularly from developing countries, in international maritime law.
Prof. Attard has been a visiting professor of international law at the University of Rome II, a senior visiting research fellow at the University of Oxford, a Fulbright fellow at Yale Law School and, in 2008, was appointed professor Invité at the Université de Paris I – Pantheon Sorbonne. He held the posts of special adviser to the IMO secretary general in London and senior legal adviser to the UN Environmental Programme executive director in Nairobi.
