Birkirkara FC opened their transfer campaign for season 2011-2012 by engaging the services of midfielder Leighton Grech.
In a statement yesterday evening, Birkirkara said the 21-year-old Grech has joined the Stripes on a long-term five-year contract.
Grech is a Hibernians FC nursery product and last season he was loaned out to Vittoriosa Stars.
Although failing to help his team retain their Premier League status, Grech was definitely one of the best youngsters in the entire division last season. In fact, he was voted as the second most promising player at the 2011 Malta Football Awards held last month.
Last season, the Malta Under-21 international made 20 appearances for Vittoriosa Stars and scored two goals.
This season Birkirkara are coached by Patrick Curmi, formerly of Marsaxlokk. The Stripes make their first official showing of 2011-12 in the Euro Cup on Monday.
