Roberta Cutajar’s hopes of advancing to her first European Championship final were ended by Latvia’s Tatjana Vasiljeva who beat the Maltese hopeful 4-2 in Sofia yesterday.
Cutajar, who progressed to the last four with a 4-1 win over Germany’s Anne Hirsch, found the going tough yesterday as Vasiljeva won the opening three frames.
The 31-year-old Cutajar hit back to win the next two frames and close the gap to 3-2. But Cutajar’s hopes of a comeback were shattered when Vasiljeva took the sixth frame to seal victory. Vasiljeva will play Wendy Jans, of Belgium, in the final.
Cutajar’s defeat brings to an end Malta’s participation in the tournament.
Alex Borg lost to Daniel Wells, of Wales, 5-1 in the last 16 while Simon Zammit went down to England’s Adam Duffy 4-2 in the last 32.
