The Gozo Ministry has categorically denied a claim by the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses that nurses were being offered extra vacation leave by the ministry 'as a bribe' to conduct ECG recordings at the Emergency Department in Gozo General Hospital.
According to the union, this was being done despite a lack of proper training.
The ministry said in a statement that there were ECG Technicians at the hospital who worked on a roster covering up to 8 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays and up to 2 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays.
During the times not covered by the roster, an agreement was reached for a number of nurses to be delegated to take the tests if they were needed.
The arrangement was accepted by the Health Authorities and had been reached to ensure that the tests could be taken at all times and without delays, to safeguard the health and safety of patients.
The ministry said that procedures at the Gozo Hospital were in conformity with other hospitals in Malta.
