David Attard elected judge of International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea
Prof. David Attard
Professor David Attard has been elected judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
He was elected this morning during the meeting of states parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Prof. Attard obtained the highest vote in the elections held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. He has been, since October 1992, the director of the IMO International Maritime Law Institute, which specialises in training lawyers, particularly those from developing countries, in the field of international maritime law.
There are to date over 590 lawyers who come from over 120 states who have studied at the institute.
In 1988, on Prof. Attard's advice, the government requested the United Nations
General Assembly to take action to protect global climate.
This initiative culminated in the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Simply one of the most professional and distinguished scholars in the field: he made me love international law while I was enrolled in diplomatic studies. I am so proud to have been one of his postgraduate A-students and later on a rapporteur on one of the multiple boards of directors that he sat on. David Attard is known to be a meritocrate by excellence: I am sure he deserves the high profile post and there is no doubt that he will make Malta proud.
