An album signed by John Lennon just hours before he was shot dead has sold for around five times its estimated price at auction.

The copy of solo album Double Fantasy – autographed by the former Beatle during a radio interview – went for £23,750 at a Christie’s sale in London.

Lennon signed the album, intended as a competition prize, on the day of his death.

He was shot by Mark Chapman outside his home at the Dakota building, bordering New York’s Central Park. The album had been expected to fetch between £4,000 and £5,000. At the same sale, a fragment of Nirvana drummer’s Tama bass drum – smashed on-stage by frontman Kurt Cobain in Chicago in 1991 – went for £8,125.

A pair of Jimi Hendrix’s leather boots worn during late 1960s gigs fetched £9,375.

Another prized lot was a gold Gibson Les Paul Deluxe guitar, played by The Who’s Pete Townshend during the band’s US Quadrophenia tour. It went for £31,250.

And a bass guitar played by Dee Dee Ramone and given to a member of the audience at a Ramones gig at The Venue in Victoria, London, sold for £10,000.
