Every year between 2006 and May 23, 2011, there were between 15 and 22 pending cases before the Magistrates’ Court in Gozo (Superior Jurisdiction, Family Court), Justice Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said in reply to a parliamentary question by Leo Brincat (PL).
In the same period, a total of 24 cases for marriage annulment were decided.
There are currently six cases for marriage annulment pending before the court. The fact that a case was submitted to the Gozo Courts and not in Malta was taken to mean that at least one of the parties involved resided in Gozo.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici pointed out that the number of pending cases each year did not signify new cases. For example, a case that was started in 2006 and carried on for four years was included as pending in each of those years.
The figures concerned only cases of annulment granted by the state.
