Last weekend, the Royal Malta Golf Club organised the third Tommy Hilfiger Trophy – the last event of the season.

The competition is a three-day affair and on the last day the ladies and the men play together with the two major titles at stake.

The women golfers started their tournament on Thursday and the men’s event got underway on Saturday. Then, the best 72 golfers from the opening two days were chosen to play on Sunday in a competition held on stroke play full handicap.

Day One (combination of men and women) saw some remarkably good scores, notably Keith Woodward, with a net 60, and Joanne Cassar, 61, and David Ellis, 63.

Overall, there were 24 individual players who had a score of 68 or less (68 being Standard Scratch for course).

But, could the Day One leaders maintain their excellent scores?

Day Two winners were Paul Gray, with a net 64. He was followed by Mike Hall, with 65, and Jutta Klotz, also on 65.

Again there were 14 golfers in total who played net 68 or under.

The weather conditions on Sunday were ideal for play but, still, such an abundance of good scores is so unusual at Marsa.

The scores are aggregate of two days and Cassar was declared overall winner of the women’s Tommy Hilfiger Trophy with a combined net 131.

Ken Micallef, with 132, was the winner of the men’s event.

Cassar was Lady Captain until a fortnight ago and Micallef is just coming to the end of his term as Captain of the RMGC.

Men’s 15-28 category winner was Mike Hall, Cassar took the women’s O-23 category while Mandy Lucasse topped the women’s 24-36 class.

The winning junior was Quint Van Beek.

On Sunday, Jonathan Shaw, managing director of Tommy Hilfiger (Malta) presented prizes and trophies.

Meanwhile, the club said Nick Dougherty, the professional golfer sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger, will be visiting Malta in September for a golf clinic. He will also pay particular attention to the winners of the tournament.
