Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber won the final of Halle’s ATP tournament yesterday 7-6 (7/5), 2-0 after compatriot Philipp Petzschner was forced to retire hurt with a back injury.

Petschner suffered the injury while hitting a shot with the scores poised at 5-5 in the first set of the final.

He grimaced noticeably and although he laboured on, it was clear early in the second set that he could not continue.

On Saturday, Petzschner set up the first all-German final on the ATP World Tour since 2004 when he defeated second-seed Tomas Berdych in three sets, while Kohlschreiber booked his place in the final by beating France’s Gael Monfils.

There were great expectations for the final between the two Davis Cup team-mates, but in the end Kohlschreiber had relatively little to do in order to pick up the winner’s cheque of €75,000.

“It is a damned pity that Philipp could not play on. It is a shame for the fans but you could see he was really suffering,” said winner Kohlschreiber.

This was Kohlschreiber’s third ATP title in his career and the first time he has won the tournament in Halle.

He had previously reached the 2008 final when he was beaten by Roger Federer.

Queen’s Club final

Andy Murray’s clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Queen’s Club final has been postponed until today after heavy rain washed out play in west London yesterday.

Tournament organisers had brought forward the final to 11 a.m. yesterday in a bid to beat the rain, but prolonged downpours throughout the morning and afternoon meant there was little chance of play.

The covers briefly came off Centre Court at 3.30 p.m. before another shower forced the ground-staff to haul them back on and, with grey clouds hanging over the venue, it was decided to call off play at 5.45 p.m.

WTA Copenhagen

Danish world no.1 Caroline Wozniacki tasted success in the WTA Copenhagen tournament yesterday with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Czech fourth seed Lucie Safarova in the final.
