Forest: N. Forest sacked manager Billy Davies yesterday. The former Preston and Derby manager, who had his contract “terminated with immediate effect”, was unable to secure promotion to the Premier League in last season’s play-offs. The Midlands club said that they were talking to Steve McClaren about the vacancy at the City Ground.

Gameiro: PSG secured the first major coup of the Ligue 1 summer transfer window by completing the signing of France striker Kevin Gameiro from Lorient. Gameiro, the second highest scorer last season with 22 goals, signed for a reported fee of €11m plus add-ons.

Grosso: Fabio Grosso is likely to leave Juventus. The full-back has struggled to make an impact in Turin this season. Dubai is the next likely destination for Grosso, 33, where he would reunite with another ex-Juventus player Fabio Cannavaro who plays for Al-Ahli.

Hemed: Rangers manager Ally McCoist is holding talks with regards to making Tomer Hemed his first signing. The Israel international, 24, is on McCoist’s wanted list following favourable reports. Hemed would be available on a free transfer after a spell with Maccabi Haifa.

Panama shock: Panama ended the United States’ 26-game unbeaten run in group play at the Gold Cup on Saturday, downing the US 2-1 to book a quarter-final berth in the regional football championship. Luis Tejada scored the opener and Gabriel Gomez converted a penalty for Panama, who posted their first victory in nine meetings with a US side that had never lost a match in the group stage of any Gold Cup.

Bendtner: Inter have joined the race to sign unsettled Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner who is also attracting interest from Milan and Juventus besides Besiktas in the Turkish league. The 23-year-old has made it clear he does not want to remain at Arsenal unless he can be given regular first team football.

Boxing: Ireland’s reigning European amateur champion Paddy Barnes has been denied the chance to defend his title due to injury. Barnes was due to compete in the European Championships starting next Friday in Turkey but has been forced to withdraw after suffering ligament damage and bone bruising to his left hand.

Swimming: Four-time Olympic champion Janet Evans, in a comeback aimed at the London Olympics, set two Masters age group world records in California, on Saturday. In her first race since the 1996 Olympics, the 39-year-old mother of two swam the 400m free in 4:23.82 at the Janet Evans Invitational to set a new standard in the 35-39 age group. Evans then crushed the 800m free age-group record with a time of 8:59.06.

Cricket: The New Zealand government has approved a tour by the Zimbabwe team, saying it would waive travel sanctions on teams from the African nation. Zimbabwe are scheduled to play in New Zealand next year for the first time in 11 years and Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said the government would not block the tour.

Motor Racing: Will Power won the second race of the IndyCar Twin 275s on Saturday after Dario Franchitti edged team-mate Scott Dixon by .05 of a second in the opener. Power claimed his first victory on an oval circuit as he maintained his lead over Franchitti in the standings. Franchitti captured his 28th IndyCar career triumph, his first at the Texas oval in the unique format, which featured two 114-lap races worth half the usual points of a typical event.
