The Marsaxlokk promenade upgrading project will be officially completed on Saturday with the inauguration of a fountain in the square opposite the Church.

Resources Minister George Pullicino said the €2 million project was started in January last year and divided into three phases - the road and pavement, the promenade and the square.

The remaining work, due to be completed this week, is on the square, including the installation of a street level fountain similar to the one in St George's Square, Valletta.

The fountain had been requested by the local council.

The project included the installation of new services, paving and new street furniture.

Mr Pullicino called on the council to ensure that vans used by the monti hawkers are not driven onto the promenade, and that there is uniformity and style in the awnings and umbrellas used by restaurants which have tables on the promenade.

The project will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister during a folk festival.
