The PN’s youth movement has urged Parliament to vote in favour of the introduction of divorce to reflect democracy and guarantee that the people’s will is respected.
Although the Nationalist Party was against the introduction of divorce, MŻPN said the people’s democratic will had been expressed in the referendum when the absolute majority voted in favour of divorce legislation.
The movement said the bill before the House should be improved to become more family friendly while eliminating or clarifying any loopholes.
The statement comes in the wake of several public pronouncements by senior PN officials, including the Prime Minister, against a unanimous “yes” in parliament, even though he insisted that the law would pass.
President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami went a step further, saying he hoped that despite the referendum result, MPs would vote against divorce in Parliament, blocking its introduction.
He said although the decision of the majority had to be respected in issues of a political nature, this should not be the case when it came to moral issues.
