Blackpool, promoted to the Premier League for the first time last year, were brought down to earth with a bump as they returned to the Championship after only one season.

The Tangerines had a very mixed bag of results, completing the double on prestigious sides like Liverpool but then going down at home to the likes of Wigan.

Blackpool’s major downfall was their poor home record as they won only five matches at Bloomfield Road.

Their defence was far from solid as they let in almost 80 goals while upfront they netted 55 – a better scoring ratio than 12 other top-flight sides.

In past Premier League campaigns, their tally of 39 points would have been enough to beat the drop. A point at Old Trafford in their final match against Manchester United could have earned them salvation but it was not to be.

Blackpool received a 4-0 hiding at Championship side Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup. It was worse in the League Cup as they lost to League One side MK Dons 3-4 away at the first time of asking.

Bolton Wanderers have just brought to an end their 11th season in the Premier League, of which the last 10 came in successive years.

The fans’ favourite was manager Owen Coyle. His know-how kept the Trotters in safe waters for most of the campaign.

What the fans failed to understand, however, was how the side became so erratic after their FA Cup semi-final upset to Stoke.

The 5-0 defeat indeed shocked Bolton who, in the six Premier League matches that followed, won once and lost the other five.

More positive results would have pushed Bolton up the table, in a much admirable placing than 13th.

On the away front, Bolton stuttered , gaining only two wins. They had the worst away record in the Premiership alongside Birmingham and West Ham who were also relegated.

Johan Elmander has left the Trotters on a free and joined Galatasaray. It is a pity that Bolton failed to offer him a new contract.

Bolton lost to Stoke in the last four of the FA Cup after they had ousted Birmingham (3-2 away), Fulham (1-0 away) and Wigan (1-0). The Wanderers did not enjoy the same fortunes in the League Cup as lost at Burnley 0-1 in round three.
