The Maltese Amateur Fishermen Federation regrets to show its dismay and disapproval at the manner in which Transport Malta’s maritime section treats local amateur mariners and the public.

On Friday, May 27, a notice to mariners, No. 39 of 2011, was issued notifying mariners that any boat, mooring and associated tackle situated in Wied il-Buni, Birżebbuġa should be removed by June 10 as extensive dredging works are to be carried out.

This project implies that a considerable number of boats have to leave their moorings with no alternative mooring site, now that the summer season is at hand and everybody has done seasonal work on his vessel. The maritime authority should consider allocating other sites for these boat owners.

The federation is not against any project which helps the economy of Malta, however, all the boat owners pay licences for their boats and in return expect a minimum of respect. Works in that area can easily be done in winter. That basin is well protected by the Freeport terminal.

Dredging works cause disruption of the seabed with consequent turbulent and muddy if not infected waters. All this work is taking place a few metres away from the only sandy beach in the south of Malta, once called Pretty Bay, and along the coast of Wied il-Buni.

Apart from the local population, in summer this beach is frequented by thousands of other Maltese citizens and tourists. We are sure that if this projects starts, swimming will be prejudiced with a consequent decline in business for all bars, restaurants etc.

The federation cannot understand how in 2006/2007 it was agreed that any works at sea in the area cannot begin during the summer season and that an alternative site for the boat owners will be allotted.

This agreement seems to have been changed without any consultation. This situation will lead to the casting of more illegal moorings which the federation deplores.

It is unbelievable how the health authorities agreed to these works during the summer swimming period. If this situation is not remedied, we suggest that notices be issued saying that the whole area is unfit for swimming. Otherwise medical staff at the Paola health centre needs to be increased.

We also ask, is the planning authority silent on this issue?

We hope that all the authorities concerned reconsider this project and after due consultation with all stakeholders including the local amateur fishing association, a satisfactory agreement will be reached for the benefit of all.
