Every year in spring, two races, eight and 13 miles, are held in Gozo. Starting from Xagħra, these races are not for the faint-hearted. They require stamina and a conviction on the athletes’ part that the hills are not insurmountable.

Both races start with a decline and slowly progress into a steep uphill, whereby the runners head to the top of Rabat. They are very scenic races and the thrill of being outdoors seems to be shared and appreciated by the members of the Ladies’ Running Club (LRC).

These races are their favourite events, proving that the ladies do not shy away from a challenge but also cherish the peace and tranquility of a race. The four ladies who ran in both the eight- and 13-mile races were pleased with their results as they all secured a prize.

In the 13-miler, Ramona Engerer placed second overall in a time of 1hr 39 mins – a commen-dable time, considering the relatively steep uphill at the finish. The third female overall in the 13-miler was Mireille Gabarretta in 1hr 41mins.

Two members of the Ladies’ Running Club also took part in the eight-mile race.

Graziella Schembri finished second overall in 1hr 09mins and Christine Attard was first in the 55+ category.
