Paid apps in Google’s Android market are now available to Maltese Android users in smartphones and tablets. Until now Maltese users could only download and install the free apps.

Malta thus joined the already long list of countries where the service is available, which includes far-flung places like Burkina Faso, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mauritius just to mention a few.

Google’s Android operating system is increasingly becoming popular among the Maltese, thanks to the launch of smartphone models from different manufacturers and the new tablets available from both mobile communication operators and other retail outlets.

Earlier this year i-Tech tried to define the Maltese market in terms of market share for the different operating systems but the Maltese mobile operators were very secretive.

The most popular mobile operating systems seem to be Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS, available on the iPhone smartphone and the iPad tablet. The latter has not yet been officially launched in Malta though it is available, sometimes at exorbitant prices, from some retail shops.
