The Hewlett Packard Company have issued a recall of notebook computer batteries, the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority said.

It said that the lithium-ion rechargeable batteries being recalled are used with various HP and Compaq models of notebook computers.

HP said that this was an expansion of a voluntary recall programme announced in May 2009. The affected battery packs contain cells that have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

Consumers should immediately remove the batteries from their notebook computer and contact HP or their local representative to determine if their battery is included in this recall.

Consumers who had previously checked their batteries and were informed they were not included in
previous announcements were being urged to check again.

Consumers with recalled batteries will receive a free replacement battery.

After removing the recalled battery from their notebook computer, consumers may use the AC adapter to power the computer until a replacement battery arrives.
