This Natura 2000 site, also known as il-Magun, is a headland located in the limits of Nadur. The vegetation present here at Il-Qortin tal-Magun and il-Qortin il-Kbir is typical of a garrigue type of habitat dominated by low shrubs, technically known as phrygana, although carob formations also exist. This site, which is exposed to northerly winds, in fact provides an exceptional mature phrygana habitat, perhaps being the best example of such a habitat in the Maltese islands.
The area is of great ecological importance because its garrigue hosts rare and highly localised species. It is characterised by the shrubby kidney vetch, combined with the white rock rose. Species like the tree spurge and wild thyme also alternate in dominance.
This Natura 2000 site will be subject to the preparation of a management plan and/or legislation in the near future, as part of an EU-funded project that Mepa is undertaking for the management planning all the terrestrial Natura 2000 sites of the Maltese islands.
