This natural cave, which can be found in the limits of Rabat, is several metres deep on a two-storey plan. The cave hosts protected bat species, namely the Lesser Horseshoe Bat and the Lesser Mouse-eared Bat.

The agricultural land which surrounds the cave is vital for these two species as it serves as a foraging ground to both insect-eating species. The cave is also an important archaeological site forming part of a late Roman cave system. L-Għar ta’L-Iburdan is not very well known. Its entrance is shallow and inconspicuous and is located within private grounds, thereby meaning that the public cannot access the cave much.

In fact, the cave is usually only visited by archaeologists, scientists and cave enthusiasts. This Natura 2000 site will be subject to the preparation of a management plan and/or legislation in the near future, as part of an EU-funded project that Mepa is undertaking for the management planning all the terrestrial Natura 2000 sites of the Maltese islands.
