Israeli army gunfire killed 11 people and wounded about 100 others today as demonstrators on the Syrian side tried to cross the ceasefire line on the annexed Golan, Syria's SANA news agency said.

"11 people were killed and more than 100 wounded as Israeli soldiers attacked the young demonstrators," it said.

The protest drew Syrian and Palestinian youths to mark the anniversary of the 1967 Six-Day War when Israel seized the Golan, Syrian television said, showing footage of Israeli soldiers opening fire.

The demonstrators chanted slogans and hurled rocks as they scaled the fence at several locations to try to enter the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, the television reported.

On May 15, Israeli gunfire killed 12 people and wounded hundreds as Palestinians marched on Israel's borders with Lebanon, Syria and Gaza in a mass show of mourning over the creation of the Jewish state.
